This series of images shows the gradual breakup of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. Over time, the pieces move farther apart; one even appears to vanish. Astronomers are unsure if the vanishing fragment disintegrated or simply ran out of vaporizing gases, leaving a rocky core not visible in the image.
